How to Get Your Dental Practice Showing Up on Google Maps

When patients search “dentist near me,” Google Maps decides who they see first. Here is how to set up your Google Business Profile so your practice shows up and gets the call.

When someone searches “dentist near me” or “teeth cleaning near me,” the first thing they usually see is a map with three practices listed under it. Those listings come from Google Business Profiles, and for many patients, that map is where the decision gets made.

If your practice is not showing up there, you are missing patients who are actively looking for exactly what you offer. Here is how to fix that.

How Google decides who shows up

Google ranks local results using three main factors:

  • Relevance: How well your profile matches what the patient searched for
  • Distance: How close you are to the person searching
  • Prominence: How well known and trusted your practice looks online, including reviews

You cannot change your location, but you have a lot of control over relevance and prominence. That is where the steps below come in.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your practice on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create one at business.google.com. Google will ask you to verify that you own the business, usually by phone, email, video or postcard.

Until your profile is verified, most of your edits will not show up publicly.

2. Choose the right categories

Your primary category tells Google what you are. For most offices, that is “Dentist.” Then add secondary categories that match your services, such as “Cosmetic Dentist,” “Pediatric Dentist” or “Dental Hygienist.”

Pick only the categories that truly fit. Accurate beats more.

3. Fill out every section

A complete profile looks more trustworthy to patients and to Google. Make sure you have:

  • Your exact business name, with no extra keywords stuffed in
  • Phone number and website link
  • Accurate hours, including holiday hours
  • A list of your services with short descriptions
  • Insurance and accessibility details where available

Your name, address and phone number should match your website exactly. Small differences can confuse Google.

4. Add real photos

Profiles with real photos tend to get more clicks and calls. Upload photos of:

  • Your team
  • Your front desk and treatment rooms
  • The outside of your office, so patients know where to go
  • Your logo and a cover photo

Add new photos every month. It keeps your profile fresh and shows Google that your practice is active.

5. Get reviews, and reply to all of them

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for both patients and Google. The easiest way to get more is simply to ask, right after a great visit.

To make it easy:

  • Put a review QR code at your front desk
  • Send a short text with your review link after appointments
  • Train your team to mention it while patients are checking out

Reply to every review, good or bad. A short, kind response shows future patients that real people care about their experience. Never share patient health details in a reply.

6. Post updates regularly

Google Business Profile lets you publish short posts, like specials, new services, team news or seasonal reminders. Posting a few times a month keeps your profile active and gives patients more reasons to choose you.

Your quick Google checklist

  • Profile claimed and verified
  • Correct primary and secondary categories
  • Every section filled out, matching your website
  • Fresh photos every month
  • A simple system to ask for reviews, and replies to all of them
  • Regular posts
